COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
70% attendance, 4 exams.
EXAMINATION CONDITIONS:
During the course there will be three unit examinations and a comprehensive final examination. Questions on the examination are objective-type and are based on the lectures and the course manual.? Each student is required to bring two #2 pencils for each exam. Cell phones are not allowed in the examinations. Unit examinations scheduled for 2 hours are designed to be completed by most students within 1 hour and 20 minutes. The additional 40 minutes are included to accommodate students who need extra time. Similarly, the 3-hour final examination is designed to be completed by most students within 2 hours, with the extra hour to accommodate students needing extra time.
GRADING POLICY:
Ten percent (10%) of the score is reserved for attendance.
In order to avoid confusion about where a student stands with respect to his or her numerical and letter grade, grades will not ordinarily be curved. The passing grade requires an aggregate total of 70% for the course.? Letter grades will be assigned as follows:

Except for legitimate and confirmed excuses (illness, death in family, etc.), students must take examinations on the dates and times scheduled. See the NJDS student handbook for a full explanation of grades.

MAKEUP EXAMINATION POLICY:
Make-up unit examinations (Exams 1-3) ordinarily will not be given.? If an exam is missed for valid reasons as determined by the Student Affairs Office, the student?s final grade will be averaged from the remaining exams.? The Department reserves the right to require any student to sit for make-up exams that may be scheduled at any time prior to the end of June next year. In addition, all students must take the Final (comprehensive) Examination.
Students who do not pass the course must follow programs as stipulated by the Dental Executive Faculty, except as specified under Attendance Policy below.
EXAMINATION REVIEW POLICY:
Copies of the exams will be posted for student review for a one-hour period on each of two days following the examination.? The days, times and places of postings will be announced at each examination.?
ABSENTEE POLICY:
Please read this carefully.? In accordance with NJDS policy, a minimum of 70% attendance is required to pass the course.? Students with less than 70% attendance will automatically receive the grade F, irrespective of performance in the exams.? Attendance will be taken at each lecture (review sessions are optional). The attendance sheet will be available in the lecture hall for 15 minutes at the beginning of each lecture. Anyone arriving after this will be unable to sign in and will be considered absent.? Legitimate excuses filed with the student affairs office will be honored.
If you feel that you have passed an equivalent course from another school, contact the course director within the first two weeks from the starting date of the course. (Later requests will not be entertained).? If the Department finds the evidence (transcripts, course description and syllabus) favorable, you will be asked to take a challenge examination in Microbiology. If you obtain a passing grade, you may be granted an exemption. The Department reserves the right to prescribe a program of learning to keep your knowledge current, and may require full attendance of the course.
CONDUCT/ETHICS:
Each student is unique and entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.? Students are expected to take the initiative in seeking assistance whenever required. Each faculty member is ready to help when requested.
The Department of Microbiology maintains research programs in many areas of microbiology. Interested and qualified students are welcome to participate in these programs. The Department has weekly seminars to which all interested students are invited.
TUTORIALS/REMEDIATION:
Tutorial help will always be available. Contact the Course Director if you need this help.? The Department of Microbiology and Molecular Genetics is located in the new International Center for Public Health (ICPH), 225 Warren St. The Course Director will attend most of the lectures and will be available immediately thereafter; otherwise, the Course Director will have office hours by appointment in the ICPH. For other matters regarding the course please contact the Course Director by telephone or by e-mail (see below).? For attendance matters, contact the Course Secretary (see below). In the event you cannot satisfactorily resolve a problem with the Course Director, you may contact the Departmental Chair whose decision will be final and binding on all course related matters.? Students with less than 70% attendance will not be offered remediation, and must repeat the course in the following year.? In addition, the Department reserves the right to deny remediation to those students whose aggregate score, calculated as above, falls below? 65% (grade D), and whose attendance record falls below 90%.
